A NEW memorial stone to Irvine man John Smith, who died in battle during the Spanish Civil War, was unveiled last Thursday.
John came from Clark Drive and was the only Irvine man to join the International Brigade and fight against the fascist forces trying to overthrow the Republican government of Spain at the time.
John joined on January 1, 1937 but tragically was killed during the Battle of Ebro in September 1938.
The Irvine and North Ayrshire Trades Union Council organised the event at Knadgerhill Cemetery last week, paying tribute to the local hero.
After gathering at the cemetery gates, a procession made its way to John’s grave, where the memorial stone was unveiled.
