A MAN who was caught drinking at the wheel on the A77 has been fined.
Bennet of Lane Crescent Drongan admitted driving while more than twice the legal limit on the A77 near Whitletts Roundabout in January.
The 28-year-old appeared before Sheriff Carole Cunninghame at Ayr Sheriff Court last week.
The court heard how Bennet was observed by police officers on the A77 at 5.50pm.
The Depute Fiscal said: “The vehicle was over the line for the northbound lane. It continued to waiver. The vehicle was stopped.
“When it was searched there were five cans of Tennent’s lager. One was empty and another was 3/4 empty, standing up behind the drivers seat.”
Speaking on his behalf, defence solicitor, Peter Lockhart said: “This is not a good report. My client had been in the Merchant Navy and developed an alcohol problem.
“The night before this incident, he had been drinking. It was treacherous on the road down from Glasgow. He got stressed and began to drink.”
Bennet has been fined £300 and has been disqualified from driving for 14 months. His licence has been endorsed.
