A TEENAGER who drove a car at speeds of up to 55mph on to a basketball court where children were playing has been locked up after breaching his order.

Marcus James Logan, 19, was locked up for five months at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week after failing to pay a £940 fine or complete 140 hours of community service.

The court heard Logan, of Castle Street, Ardrossan, had been given the fine and unpaid work as part of a Community Payback Order after previously pleading guilty to driving dangerously at speeds of 55mph in a 30mph zone, whilst only in possession of a provisional licence and without insurance.

The court was previously told Logan admitted weaving between parked cars, repeatedly drive through red lights, causing other road users to take evasive action.

Logan also admitted to driving along a footpath and onto a children’s basketball court whilst children were playing on October 3, 2016. All of the offences happened between High Road, Saltcoats, McDowall Place, Ardrossan, the common land near to Elm Park Road, Stanley Burn, Ardrossan and elsewhere.

Logan’s lawyer told the court his client had been given “the wake up call he needs”

He said: “He is still quite a young man and has had a chaotic and very difficult upbringing. He suffers from depression and anxiety.

“He has been remanded in prison since last Friday and he now knows how serious it is and doesn’t want to repeat the experience.

“His position to me is that this is the wake up call he needs. He is in a steady relationship and she is pregnant with his first child which is due in July.

“He knows the severity of his situation and he knows he has reached the end of the line.

“He is committed to dealing with this matter, if you are prepared to give him a final chance.”

However Sheriff Iona MacDonald refused to give Logan anymore chances.

She said: “This offence was in 2016 and here we are in 2018 still dealing with this, despite you being warned.

“Mr Logan you said you would do the unpaid work and that was way back in October and here we are five months on an nothing. If you had done a wee bit even or paid anything it may have shown that you were trying.

“I am going to revoke the order and the only alternative is a custodial sentence for the road traffic offences.”
