NORTH Ayrshire’s top cop is warning that disorder will not be treated lightly after an incident involving 100 kids in Kilwinning at the weekend.

The youngsters, some of whom appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, shouted abuse at officers and threw stones at them.

Chief Inspector Brian Shaw made a plea to the parents of ‘80-100’ children who were out in force in the town on Saturday night to know ‘where their kids are and what they’re up to’.

The call comes after worried residents called police in their droves on Saturday night after the mammoth group gathered in the Dirrans Sports Ground.

And CI Shaw is also warning that retrospective action will be taken.

At around 7pm on Saturday evening, a number of calls were made to police about a large group of youths near to the Dirrans Sports Ground.

Officers responded and a large number of the children were noted to be under the influence of alcohol and were abusive to police by shouting and throwing stones at them.

CI Shaw told the Times: “I am very disappointed with the conduct of the young people who had no regard for the local community in the way they were conducting themselves. This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated.”

CI Shaw added: “Plans are in place to review CCTV and retrospective arrests and detentions could take place.

“We will have additional officers on patrol in the area to ensure that it doesn’t happen again.”

The majority of the children are believed to be of secondary school age with some as young as 14 thought to be involved.

Brian Shaw added: “I am absolutely aware that a lot of these kids were of school age and I would make a plea to the local parents to ensure they know where their kids are and what they are up to in light of what has taken place.”

Anyone with information or concerns surrounding the incident is asked to contact Police Scotland via 101.
