RESIDENTS are invited to ‘lumber’ along to a free wood giveaway this weekend.

Residents will be able to collect a share of free wood logs and wood chip – all made from hardwood – from the former Dreghorn Recycling Centre on Saturday, June 23, 8am-4pm, and Sunday 24 June, 8am-3pm.

The woodchip can be used to spruce up gardens in time for summer by using it in landscaping, pathways and surfacing play areas while the wood logs would make ideal firewood.

The wood has been collected as part of the council’s work to trim and remove trees, with majority coming from more recent work carried out in the Broomlands and Bourtreehill areas.

Councillor Jim Montgomerie, Cabinet Member for Place, said: “This wood giveaway is a great opportunity for our residents to reap the rewards of our commitment to recycling and sustainability.

“By reusing the wood our officers have collected as part of their everyday work duties, we are diverting it from landfill and instead using it to stage a worthwhile community event.

“We would encourage all those who could make use of the wood to head along and grab a share.”

Wood supplies are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. In the interest in fairness, there will be limits to the quantity of wood collected per person.

Shovels will be available on site to lift wood chippings, however, you must bring your own bags or storage boxes.

Council officers will be on site throughout the day and will require to see proof of North Ayrshire residency, such as a drivers licence or utility bill, before allowing entry.
