The official name of Irvine’s new primary school will be decided later this month.

After engaging with the school community, a shortlist of three names has been put forward for the facility at Montgomerie Park.

The three options under consideration are...

· Belvidere Primary School – Belvidere is the name of a hill within the adjacent Eglinton Park

· Eglinton Primary School – due to the close proximity of the Eglinton Estate to the new school

· Montgomerie Park Primary School – the location of the school is within the development of new homes known as Montgomerie Park

At a meeting of Cabinet on February 20, elected members will consider the options before making a final decision.

Work on the new school began in May 2023 and will comprise of 12 classrooms, early learning facilities, a gymnasium and dining facilities along with outdoor learning spaces including a seven-a-side all weather pitch.

It will accommodate up to 342 pupils, plus an early learning and childcare facility with 32 places for three to five-year-olds, and 15 places for two-year-olds.

In August 2023, officers from the Cultural and Heritage services were asked to compile a list of potential school names based on the history and landmarks of the local area.

Councillor Shaun Macaulay, Cabinet Member for Education and Young People, said: “This is a hugely important moment for the new school and a big responsibility for all the elected members involved.

"Agreeing a suitable name for the new school is vitally important for the project to allow a number of key decisions to be taken timeously such as school uniform/branding, signage and décor within the building and creating a sense of identity for the new school community.”
