AN IRVINE man who was persuaded by his tipsy friend to take his car to get some coffee ended up having a nightmare - as he was caught by police with no licence, insurance AND cannabis in his pockets.
David McNeill, of Broomlands Drive, had been at a friend's house on November 6
and they had ran out of coffee.
The 28-year-old's friend had been drinking and suggested to McNeill that he take
his car and go to the garage.
And as he headed along Kilwinning Road at around 10.30pm his number was up as police pulled him over.
Procurator Fiscal Laura McAlees told Kilmarnock Sheriff Court that the police first noted that McNeill's friend's car had no MOT certificate.
But it wasn't long before they discovered that McNeill himself had no driving licence and no insurance cover.
And matters went from bad to worse for him after he was searched at Saltcoats
Police Station and found to have four bags of cannabis on him.
His lawyer Peter Murray told the court: "He know he shouldn't have been anywhere near a vehicle.
"It is unfortunate that he took up his friend's suggestion."
Sheriff Elizabeth McFarlane told McNeill: "It always astonished me that people
like you get behind the wheel of a car - which is a lethal weapon - without
insurance."
She banned McNeill from holding a driving licence for one year and fined him a
total of £290.
