A WOMAN injured in a smash with a drunk Irvine driver only found out she was pregnant after being treated at hospital.

And Patrick Finn, of Heatherstane Bank, breathed a sigh of relief after it was revealed that Natalie Condy's unborn baby had suffered no injuries as a result of the smash.

Ms Condy was driving along the A736 near to Auchentiber when the crash happened.

As she approached a bend, Finn, 58, was travelling in the opposite direction. Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard that, as she headed around the bend, the woman

was confronted by Finn heading straight at her vehicle on the wrong side of the road after he had lost control of his car.

"The complainer tried to swerve out of the accused's way," said the Procurator Fiscal.

"However, this was insufficient to avoid a crash. Both cars impacted and span out of control, travelling for around 75 metres down the roadway before coming to a stop."

Ms Condy managed to get out of her vehicle but Finn was found to be "slumped" over the steering wheel and was unconscious.

When paramedics arrived they spoke to Finn when he regained consciousness and smelled alcohol.

Around two hours after the crash a blood sample taken at Crosshouse Hospital saw Finn around three and a half times the drink drive limit.

The fiscal added that Natalie Condy had discovered she was three weeks pregnant following medical checks carried out following the incident.

"The first full scan taken last week showed that there were no physical abnormalities to the baby at that stage," she said.

However, the woman did suffer whiplash and will require to wear a back brace to support her during her pregnancy because of the injuries.

Finn admitted drink driving and dangerous driving at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week.

Sheriff Brian Murphy deferred sentence on Finn for the production of background reports.

He was disqualified from driving in the meantime.
