A HUGE blaze has forced many locals to stay indoors after breaking out at an Irvine industrial state early this morning.

Around 30 firefighters were called out to the plastics unit at the Riverside Industrial Estate at around 2.40am.

Part of the building has been destroyed by the fire.

A number of residents have been advised to keep indoors and ensure their windows are shut if they feel the toxic smoke is affecting them.

Smoke was affecting visibility the B730 between Dreghorn and Dundonald and also on the A71 between Corsehill Mount Roundabout and the Warrix Interchange.

Strathclyde Police have put road diversions in place.
