Young Kilwinning man has to pay for damage
A CAR mechanic who drunkenly smashed his vehicle into a set of traffic lights is having to fork out for the damage he caused.
Bryan Boylan, of Hillcrest Place, Kilwinning was almost three times the limit when he crashed into a set of temporary lights last month.
Police were called out at around 4.15am after the report of a smash, finding the 20-year-old at the scene.
The car had come to a halt part of the way onto a pavement after Boylan had hit the traffic lights in Glencairn Street, Stevenston on February 7.
Officers became concerned about Boylan and asked him to provide a breath sample, which ended up proving positive.
He told police that he had taken his last drink about two hours beforehand.
Boylan's lawyer Graeme Cunningham told Kilmarnock Sheriff Court that the car mechanic's car insurance was null and void because of the drink-drive reading, meaning that he would have to pay up for the damage to the traffic lights.
He added: "He has been very candid. He was at a party at a friends having a few drinks.
"He will end up having to pay for the traffic lights."
A further charge of failing to stop and report an accident to police was dropped by prosecutors at the court last Thursday.
Sheriff Elizabeth McFarlane banned Boylan from the roads for one year and fined him a total of £400.
