Fire crews from Dreghorn and Kilwinning stations attended reports of a fire in Marine Drive, Irvine on Wednesday night.

On arrival they found a two-storey detached derelict property with the first floor well alight.

The crews in attendance had to create a relay system to provide sufficient water at the scene of the fire to allow high pressure hose reel jets and main firefighting jets to be deployed to extinguish the blaze.

Due to the poor structural condition of the building HERAS fencing had to be used to secure the perimeter of the premises to maintain public safety.

A second derelict property in Kirk Vennel, Irvine was also involved in a fire on Saturday night at around 11pm.

On that occasion it was a detached single-storey building which required fire teams utilise high pressure hose reels and main jets to bring the blaze under control.

Appliances remained at the scene of that incident until almost 2am the next morning.

Station Manager Derek Davidson said: “Individuals who own derelict premises have a duty of care to maintain them in a safe and secure condition which includes them being lock fast and preventing entry to members of the public.

“Similarly anyone who enters unlawfully is essentially trespassing and putting themselves at great risk if the condition of the building is poor or in the event of fire they could easily become disorientated, trapped and lose their life.”
