Dr Philippa Whitford MP has spoken out after the terror attack in London last week.

The Central Ayrshire MP, who was in parliament at the time of the attack, assured Twitter followers that she and her staff were all fine, and their thoughts were with the casualties and their families.

Five have been confirmed dead following the terrorist attack – including the attacker– with at least 50 injured. Dr Philippa Whitford told the Irvine Times: “Wednesday’s events have shocked everyone to the core and my heart goes out to the family of PC Keith Palmer, whose courage undoubtedly prevented further casualties, and to all the other victims and their loved ones.

“I am always so glad to touch down at Glasgow and get a hug from my husband, Hans, but it was much more poignant last Thursday.

"I was so thankful to get home and could not help but think of those who would not be going home after the events of the previous day.

“The professionalism of the security personnel in the Palace of Westminster at the time of the attacks was such that everyone stayed calm during the initial confusion and tribute must be paid to them and to the emergency services who sprang into action without knowing what they might be faced with.

“I was struck by the camaraderie amongst staff whilst events were unfolding, which quickly developed into a determination to ensure that the democracy and the freedoms we hold dear are not impinged in any way. To do otherwise would send the wrong message to those who wish to destroy our way of life and disrespect the memory of those who have lost their lives trying to defend it.”
