“Say no to Indyref 2, and get behind Ruth”, is the campaign slogan of Irvine East, Scottish Conservative and Unionist candidate Angela Stephen.

Angela, 44, has lived in the Bourtreehill area of the town for over 20 years.

Angela said: “A lot of locals are worried about the amount of litter in Irvine, or better put, a lack of bins.

“I’ve been wandering around the town recently and noticed there are no bins to put rubbish in.

“It makes it hard to try and convince young people to put their rubbish in the bin rather than dropping it on the ground – especially if there are no bins available.

“Another important issue is street lighting, I live near Bourtreehill Park and I know that plenty of people don’t like using the park when it gets dark.

“It is such a nice park and it should be used more – but it needs better lighting and bins to keep it tidy.”

Angela, who has been canvassing the town thinks that there is too much focus on Independence and not enough on the issues that people actually care about.

“The SNP have so many devolved powers now and they don’t use them to a good standard. Independence is all they think about.

Asked about what got her into politics, Angela said: “It all started with the referendum in 2014.

“I saw so much division between people. “I voted to remain, and with the SNP in power I knew there was always a chance we could split, so I wanted to get involved to campaign against it.

“I think Nicola Sturgeon was wrong to try and trigger Indyref 2. She’s disrespecting the way that people voted in 2014.”
