An Irvine girl is taking the stage by storm – all while studying sciences at university.

Beth Cumming, 21 is currently a third year student at the University of Strathclyde, studying Forensic and Analytical Chemistry.

By day she busies herself in a lab, but by night she transforms into a mistress of stage and screen.

Joining the university’s drama group ReAct has let Beth continue doing something she loves while studying.

Beth said: “I’ve been acting since primary school, from school plays to youth theatre.

“I’ve performed in loads of shows – musical theatre, straight plays, even devised theatre and I’ve done a little bit of extras work in film as well.

“I’ve been in Les Miserables, The Little Mermaid, Grease, A Christmas Carol, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Peter Pan to name but a few.”

The group’s next big show is ‘Kill Me, Deadly!’ to be performed on April 7 and April 8 and Beth is right in the centre of it.

Beth said: “You’ve got the jaded detective, the dangerous femme fatale, the gangster kingpin, it’s brilliant and very funny. I’m playing Ida, our detective’s faithful secretary.

“I’d say the toughest part of playing Ida is that there’s a lot more to her than meets the eye.

“She plays on that stereotypical “bimbo” secretary character. At first she seems like she’s just the girl who answers the phones but it turns out she’s actually the brains behind the whole operation.”

This theatre at heart girl wants to continue acting after university, she said: “My plan for after university is to hopefully have a good graduate job, maybe working for a forensics lab.

“I’m not a fast runner and I don’t know Kung Fu, so I’m studying forensic chemistry to fight crime instead. Scientist is the new superhero.

“But I’d love to continue acting after university.”

Come along and see Beth and the other stellar cast of Re-Act at the Strathclyde Union, John Street Glasgow on April 7 and April 8.

Tickets are £5 online.
