An Irvine cancer survivor is braving the shave after twice beating the deadly disease.

Bob Farquhar is having his hair shaved off to raise money for other cancer victims after being struck with the disease twice in the last six years.

The 58-year-old grandfather had his voice box removed earlier this year after being diagnosed with larynx cancer just six years after overcoming cancer of the prostate.

The construction supervisor underwent throat surgery in April to have his full voice box removed and a stoma fitted to allow him to still be able to speak.

Daughter Claire McCrea says the family have been through a difficult time, but her inspirational dad has been determined to fight it all the way, with the full support of the “family rock” - her mum Lynn, 56.

She told the Times: “My dad has been incredible. He’s been through so much, we all have as a family, but we are very close and we have just had to pull together. My mum is like the rock of the family. She has just dealt with it all amazingly well. This is the second time he has had cancer but he was just as determined to beat it again.”

After his surgery the family feared Bob would have to endure months of gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment, but amazingly, the surgery was enough to beat the disease and Bob has been given the all clear.

Claire said: “That was the thing that we were really worried about, that he would go through all that trauma of surgery and having his voice box removed, which is obviously a very, very difficult thing to deal with, to then have to go and have more treatment. But the surgeons said the operation was a complete success and he has since been given the all clear.”

Now Claire says Bob wants to “give something back”.

She added: “Dad just wants to give something back for all the support and help he received and to prove to other cancer patients out there that there is hope.”

Claire has organised a Brave the Shave event at Sassy’s, where she is the Hair Salon manager, on Sunday, August 27.

As well as Bob, Claire’s brother Graeme, who is currently working offshore, will also be shaving his head during a live Skype broadcast.

There will also be sponsored leg waxing.

Claire says people are invited down to the salon to participate or spectate and there will be beers, Prosecco, tea, coffee, cakes, raffles, Vanilla Joe’s ice cream and prizes top be won.

If you would like to join in or for more information contact Sassy’s on 01294 272797.

The Irvine Times will be joining in the fun with all pictures in next week’s paper.

Good luck Bob from everyone at the Irvine Times!
