IRVINE'S Coastwatch are looking for brave volunteers to take a festive dip in some icy waters for charity.

The charity is hoping to get people to sign up to their inaugural Irvine Beach Polar Plunge on New Year's Day.

Dippers will be invited down to Irvine Beach in fancy dress at 11am where they will run in to the freezing cold sea to raise money for charity.

Coastwatch's Billy Lamb says dippers are welcome to raise money for any charity of their choice and there will be tea, coffee and hot soup for them after they emerge from the water.

He said: "This is something that happens in other towns, traditionally on boxing Day or New Year's Day, but this will be the first for Irvine.

"Obviously people just do it for fun or they can raise money and choose their own charity to raise money for, although, obviously it would be nice if they chose Coastwatch.

"We will organise the whole event and have hot drinks and hot soup for people coming out of the water.

"Folk can dress up if they want to, it's all in good fun and for a good cause.

"We just spoke about it the other day and we have eight people signed up already. If anyone wants to register they can do, free of charge just by dropping us an email or calling the Coastwatch office, just so we have an idea of numbers."
