'I'LL PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE TO GET THE JAIL'

A DRUNKEN woman told police officers she would punch them in the face "to get the jail" outside an Irvine pub, a court has heard.

Caroline Carruthers, of McKinlay Crescent, was placed under arrest after threatening and spitting at people outside the Delta Bar in Bridgegate on December 22.

It was around 9.20pm that police officers on foot patrol in the area spotted her outside the pub shouting at the people passing by.

The approached and asked what was wrong, to which she replied that she was drunk and wanted to go home.

The officers took hold of Carruthers, 38, as she became aggressive, clenching her fists and warning: "I'm going to f-ing punch you in the face to get the jail."

She then raised her fist to one of the constables and repeated: "I'm actually going to f-ing punch you in the face."

Carruthers then turned her attention on a nearby female witness, shouting: "What the f--- are you laughing at?", before lunging at her and spitting at her.

Police grabbed Carruthers and informed her she was under arrest, at which point she turned to the female officer and spat in her face.

She was then put into the rear of a police vehicle and taken to Kilmarnock Police Office, continuing to spit again and again on the way.

Carruthers appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week where she admitted behaving in a threatening manner and two counts of assault.

The court heard she had been convicted of a similar offence in Stevenston last January, but had managed to stay out of trouble until December, when she had begun to rely very heavily on drink.

Sheriff Elizabeth McFarlane told Carruthers: "Your behaviour is absolutely disgusting. Police officers doing their job do not deserve to be treated by you in this way."

However, she added: "I'm going to give you a chance to get some help."

Sentence was deferred for reports until February.
