THE PROUD family of battling baby Carys Bray are preparing to put their best foot forward in her honour.

A 25-strong team of Carys’ family and friends are taking part in Yorkhill’s Sponsored Walk this weekend to pay tribute to the hospital staff who saved the tot’s life.

In June the Times reported how seven-month-old Carys was left clinging to life after being struck down with potentially fatal bacterial meningitis.

After taking ill suddenly at home, mum Lorrissa Spiers called for an ambulance and the tot was initially taken to Crosshouse Hospital. But doctors immediately recognised the seriousness of her symptoms and the then five-month-old baby was rushed to Yorkhill Children’s Hospital for emergency treatment.

Carys’ distraught parents Lorrissa, 17, and dad Connor Bray, 18, kept a bedside vigil, never leaving their precious baby girl’s side and saw, first-hand the wonders worked by the staff at Yorkhill.

After days of uncertainty little Carys bounced back and has since made a full recovery. Lorrissa said: “It was unbelievable. She came out of it almost as quickly as it came on. While she was in intensive care the doctor came and told us she would either bounce back quickly or go downhill rapidly. Thankfully she fought back and now you would think nothing had even happened.” Now the couple and their families, including their ever-supportive mums Alison Beaton and Donna Spiers, have decided to turn their traumatic experience into something positive and are fundraising for Yorkhill, starting with a 10K sponsored walk in August.

Lorrissa said: “The doctors, nurses and all the staff at Yorkhill are absolutely incredible and I know if it wasn’t for them then Carys might not be here so we want to do whatever we can.” If you would like to help TeamCarys then why not donate as little or as much as you can to their fund. www.justgiving.com/Alison-Beaton
