THE Captain of Irvine Carters’ Society has dramatically resigned - days before Marymass Saturday.

Wullie McColl announced his resignation at the weekend after an emergency meeting with members of the Carters’ Society.

A statement from the Carters’ Society cited “work commitments” as the reason for Mr McColl’s departure.

The role of Captain will now be filled by immediate past Captain Danny Kerr who will lead the Marymass parade this Saturday.

He revealed his shock at Mr McColl’s resignation but insists it will not affect the plans for the big day on Saturday.

He said: “We all wish Wullie well and thank him for his good service to the Carters.

“I am surprised but honoured to be back on the Captain’s horse so quickly and looking forward to another great and successful Marymass.

“Everything for next Saturday is already in place and we have re-assured the Marymass Festival Committee that everything will go ahead as planned to ensure that Irvine people and visitors to the town have another outstanding Marymass.

“Marymass is a very special day for the people of Irvine and we intend on making it another one to remember.” Mr McColl - who was re-elected for a second term as Captain last Thursday - declined to make any further comment when contacted by the Times.
