DO YOU have what it takes to make decisions which will help the lives of children and young people who are in trouble or at risk?

North, South and East Ayrshire Councils are supporting the Children’s Hearing System (CHS) in their search for new Children’s Panel members.

Children’s Panel members make vital decisions about vulnerable children and young people who are in need of care or who have offended.

Panel members come from many different backgrounds and all walks of life. You don’t need any special qualifications, but you must be over 18 years old and live or work in Ayrshire, to make sure you are familiar with the local area.

This challenging and worthwhile role requires members to have a number of qualities including the ability to stay calm in difficult situations, listen to all sides of a story and work as part of a team.

Extensive training is given to panel members to support them when making potentially life-changing decisions in the best interest of a child or young person.

Commenting on the recruitment drive, Leader of North Ayrshire Council Willie Gibson said: “The people who make up the Children’s Panel have dedicated their time and efforts to the welfare of children and young people in need of care, protection and support. It’s important we find more volunteers like this to continue the good work the Children’s Panel does.

“I would encourage anyone who feels they have what it takes to positively make a difference to the life of a young person, to consider becoming a volunteer with the Children’s Panel.” Councillor Rita Miller, Social Services Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: “Children’s Panel members are a vital part of the decision-making process in helping to make a difference for children and young people.

“We’re looking for panel members who will help achieve positive outcomes that can change the lives of these children and young people forever. It’s a hugely rewarding role and one that can make as much of a difference to you as it does to the young people involved in the process. I would urge anyone interested in improving the lives of some of the most vulnerable people within our communities to come forward and play their part.” Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council, said: “As a community we all have a role to play in giving our young people the best possible start in life. This includes offering guidance and helping those who are in difficulty. Being a member of the Children’s Panel gives people the chance to make a real and positive difference to young lives while helping to make our communities happier, safer places for all to enjoy.” This year’s national recruitment campaign runs from 25 August to 15 September.
