A Kilwinning war veteran has received the Légion d’Honneur for his part in the liberation of France.

During the war Harry Maxwell, 91, was attached to naval intelligence as a wireless officer on HMS Bulolo which was the headquarters ship for the landings.

Mr Maxwell was at Gold Beach as the British Army landed at Arromanches for the decisive conflict.

Harry Maxwell privately visited the beaches back in 2004 for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings not part of any official commemorations

The honour has been awarded to approximately 800 surviving veterans in Scotland as a thank you for their part in liberating France at President Hollande’s request.
