IRVINE looks set to sparkle again this year on Sunday, November 30, with Kilwinning’s Christmas switch-on set for Saturday, November 22.

Christmas may feel like a long way off, but for the organisers of both events, the wheels are already in motion.

Irvine Special Events Forum held their AGM last week, at which Councillor Ian Clarkson stepped down as chairman. The position was assumed by Sylvia Mallinson, with Annie McLaughlan stepping in as treasurer.

Sylvia pledged to go “bigger, better and brighter” with this year’s event, with the two main priorities of getting more people involved and more lights in the town centre.

Councillor Clarkson commented: “I am happy to hand over the reins to Sylvia Mallinson, who worked wonders last year, and is prepared to stand up and be counted as the new chairperson.

“I will still be part of the organisation, but will have more time to carry out my council duties.

“I am certain Sylvia will take this year’s switch on to an even higher level, and I will be working alongside her.” The organisers are especially keen to involve local churches and schools, and make the most of the newly-refurbished Bridgegate, which was officially opened just a week prior to last year’s event.

Ideas voiced at last week’s meeting included a live nativity scene, a choir performance on the steps of Trinity Church and making some use of Irvine Bay’s big TV (due to be installed after receiving funding from the Scottish Government).

The committee are also determined to secure another big-name celebrity to draw the crowds, after more than 10,000 people turned out to see Mark Wright, of ITV2’s 'The Only Way is Essex’.

However, the question of who they should approach is still open, and suggestions from Irvine readers are encouraged.

If you would like to contribute your own ideas, get involved with the organisation and fundraising, or secure some advertising for your business at this year’s event, the time is now.

Kilwinning’s switch-on is being organised by the team at Promoting Kilwinning, who are now preparing applications for funding to repeat last year’s success.

A spokesperson said: “We have asked the council for the use of McGavin Park again as we feel this is the only suitable central venue which meets most of the requirements. We have re-booked our favoured company who provided such a great show last year to ensure no one leaves disappointed.

“We also are now looking for contacts with local hire companies with regard lighting for the site or companies who have such links, if you think you could help either generated or plugged in to mains please do let us know.

“We will also be on the look out for fundraising and awareness towards the event, if you think you could help let us know.” Contact Jackie on 01294 558634 or email promotingkilwinning@aol.co.uk if interested in participating.
