LOCAL police took action in Kilwinning recently to clamp down on underage drinking.

Officers, along with local community planning partners, joined with up licensed off-sales in the town to raise awareness of the dangers and penalties involved for adults who purchase alcohol for underage youths.

A poster and leaflet has been distributed throughout local communities as a reminder to people that buying alcohol for anyone under 18 could result in a £5,000 fine or a prison sentence.

To get the message across, police joined Trading Standards, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, community education workers and the local Licensing Standards Officer to work with off-sales premises to target the issue.

PC Jason Peter, Safer Communities Officer, said: “The consumption of alcohol by under 18s increases the risk of them becoming involved in crime, anti-social behaviour or becoming a victim themselves - young people need to be aware that the dangers are real.

“Often they will ask family, friends or even complete strangers to purchase alcohol on their behalf, adults need to be aware that this is illegal.” The event was held as part of the ongoing Safe Positive Communities initiative being carried out by North Ayrshire Police in Kilwinning to tackle various issues affecting the area.

Anyone with information on the supply of alcohol to young people is encouraged to contact Police Scotland by calling 101 (always dial 999 in an emergency).

Information can also be given via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, where anonymity is guaranteed.
