POLICE have praised the good behaviour of car fanatics who descended on Irvine this weekend for a Cruise event.

Officers had been deployed to Irvine Beach Park on Sunday after hearing of a Car Cruise event which was taking place in the area.

Hundreds of vehicles from across Scotland congregated at the beauty spot and police say the event was almost completely trouble free.

Police Scotland’s Ayrshire Division reported that while most drivers and spectators were well behaved, one driver was reported to the procurator fiscal for driving his vehicle off-road and a number of other drivers were spoken to regarding their driving.

A spokesman for the Ayrshire Division said: “On Sunday evening (July 27) officers provided additional patrols in and around Irvine Beach Park as a large number of vehicles attended the Cruise Irvine event.

“Overall the majority of drivers and spectators were well behaved. One man will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal for allegedly driving his vehicle off-road and a small number of other drivers were spoken to by Police regarding the manner of their driving in the car-parking area which was very busy with both vehicles and pedestrians.

“We are committed to keeping people safe and are willing to work with the organisers of all local events to do so.” Before the event police warned those attending that they would be taking a no-nonsense approach to bad behaviour, such as speeding, wheel-spinning and other anti-social behaviour.

A spokesman for the Ayrshire Division said: “We understand that the majority of those attending such an event are law-abiding. Those who do chose to participate in antisocial behaviour, such as speeding, wheel-spinning or creating a disturbance will be dealt with by officers and could face prosecution or have their vehicle seized. Please keep your vehicle on the road and use the designated car-parking areas - driving off-road will not be tolerated and can cause damage to the environment.

“We will have Roads Policing and Communities Unit officers on patrol. Drivers are asked to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and that all documents, including licence, tax and insurance are in order.
