GREATER mobile phone coverage has been rolled out in Kilwinning - but Irvine will have to wait a bit longer.

Mobile company Three have confirmed that 4G coverage is now available in the town allowing smartphone users access to superfast mobile data.

Earlier this year, the company announced plans to roll out 4G in 464 towns and cities across the UK with Kilwinning joining Ayr and Kilmarnock as the only Ayrshire hotspots.

4G was designed as the successor to the 3G network which allows mobile internet access at a much higher speed.

However, it may be a while yet until Irvine receives similar coverage. Three confirmed that there are plans in place to add the town to their 4G network but no specific dates have been announced.

Judging by the response on social media, many Kilwinning residents were shocked to discover that they now have access to 4G.

One person tweeted: “I’m getting 4G in Kilwinning? What fresh witchcraft is this?!” while another person added “4G in Kilwinning? Awesome!”.

A spokesperson for Three said: “We will be bringing 4G to Irvine but we are not able to give any specific dates at the moment.

“As soon as we start adding 4G to the network in Irvine, we’ll let our customers know.

“In the meantime, our advanced 3G network will continue to give Three customers a great mobile internet experience.”
