BAFFLED Irvine residents are demanding answers after claims that “gun-shot” like noises are causing sleepless nights.

Dozens of puzzled residents have flooded social media complaining about the noises occurring throughout the night for the last few weeks.

It’s claimed that the noises - described as being like “gun-shots” - have been occurring roughly between 12am and 4am - often several times in a row.

The racket has apparently disturbed the sleep of dozens of irked residents who can’t figure out the cause of it.

However the noise is not just occurring in one area of the town.

Residents in Bourtreehill, Broomlands, Girdle Toll, Castlepark, and the Harbourside have all been left scratching their heads by the almighty bangs.

Even some residents in Dreghorn have apparently been disturbed by the noise.

Claire Galloway was one of the Irvine residents who brought the mystery to the Times attention.

She claims she’s been woken several times at night by the noise and is keen to solve the mystery.

She said: “The noises are four loud bangs with intervals of a couple of seconds.

“It stops for a few minutes then starts up again. I’ve been woken at night quite a few times because of it.

“It goes right through until about four in the morning sometimes.

“I’ve been hearing it for a few weeks now and it definitely sounds like gunshots.

“But I have no idea what’s causing it.” However, the mystery noises are bound to be explained in due course.

There have been suggestions that they may be coming from some of the factories during the night across the town or from the nearby Hillhouse Quarry in Dundonald.

Officers at Irvine Police Office confirmed that they haven’t received any complaints regarding unexplained noise.

But any residents with any concerns have been encouraged to call Police Scotland on 101.
