A KILWINNING man who was caught with cocaine after overdosing is awaiting sentencing.

Gary Gunion, of Blacklands Crescent, requested the help of paramedics after overdosing on 2g of cocaine when at home on July 25.

When paramedics arrived at his home, they were unable to gain entry and contacted police for assistance.

Officers were able to get Gunion to answer the door and said to them on “I’m OD’ing on coke”.

It was noted that the 27-year-old had white powder over his face and told police that he had used 2g of cocaine.

After carrying out a search on him, officers recovered a small bag of what appeared to be cocaine.

But Gunion denied the class-A drug was his, saying: “It’s not mine, somebody else put it there. I’ve taken all my coke.” Officers took the bag back to Saltcoats Police Office where it was revealed to be 1.2g of cocaine worth £50.

Gunion appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week and pled guilty.

His representative Mr Murray told the court how Gunion had a difficult start to the year after his relationship broke down and no longer has contact with his child.

It was revealed that Gunion started to abuse alcohol before eventually moving on to cocaine.

Solicitor for the defence Mr Murray insisted that Gunion’s overdose was a miscalculation and over-indulgence rather than an attempt to harm himself, saying that he “gave himself a fright”.

He also told how Gunion is back in full-time employment and no longer using cocaine.

Presiding Sheriff Shirley Foran gave Gunion a chance to behave himself before returning to court.

His sentencing was deferred until January.
