NEW legislation means it will be tougher than ever for people to get their hands on fireworks this month.

But North Ayrshire Council are confident it will make this year’s Guy Fawkes the best and safest yet.

The Explosive Regulations Act 2014 was introduced in October and will tighten the storage requirements for retail sales of fireworks.

And the council will now work with partners in the fire and police services, and within the wider community, to ensure the fireworks are stored safely, not supplied to under 18’s, and used legally and responsibly.

At present there are 15 businesses in North Ayrshire registered to sell fireworks and NAC are working with them to ensure they are compliant with the new requirements.

Councillor Marie Burns, cabinet member for Economy and Employment, said: “Fireworks Night is such a fantastic occasion for families across North Ayrshire. But it’s vital that fireworks are treated with respect because we all know the dangers that they pose if they are not used properly.

“The new legislation will be rigidly enforced and will help make November 5, and the run-up to the big night, far safer for everyone.

“We will be working with the 15 local businesses to make sure they follow these strict guidelines.” Retailers can be fined £5000 if they are caught selling fireworks to under 18s.
