IRVINE’S MP has voiced his disgust over the rebranding of Scotland’s veterans charity.

Brian Donohoe was outraged to learn that the Royal British Legion Scotland had been officially renamed Legion Scotland on November 10.

The Central Ayrshire politician insists he has received a number of complaints from his constituents about the change which he described as a “disgrace” and “anti-British”.

But the charity defended the rebranding last week insisting that the legal name remained the Royal British Legion Scotland and that Legion Scotland was simply the trading name.

But that did not appease Mr Donohoe who is now demanding answers over the cost of the process.

He said: “This is a disgrace and an insult to those who fought and died in wars past and present as members of Her Majesties British Armed Forces and also to those who are members and/or supporters of Royal British Legion Scotland especially those who are veterans or relatives of serving personnel.

“It is stated that Royal British Legion Scotland is still the legal name however, why change the day to day name without any consultation of members or supporters. More so how much did this unnecessary name change cost and where did the funds come from to pay for it?

“These are pertinent questions my constituents have asked me to get answers to and I have written to the charity’s Chief Executive, Kevin Gray for those answers. I do not believe that statements such as “it was always referred to as the Legion” are helpful as is stated on the RBLS website.

“I have also asked him to indicate if consideration would be made to changing the name back as I would not like to see the charity suffer as the result of what is being seen as a PR stunt and anti British.

“I very much hope this is a request that may be considered by the National Board of Trustees.”
