AN Irvine man who admitted stealing a sandwich from a supermarket has been jailed.
Stephen Hill, of Pladda Avenue, admitted stealing the snack from the Scotmid store in Stevenston on October 16 last year.
Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard last week how the 39-year-old was observed by staff putting the sandwich in his jacket pocket.
He was challenged by staff but refused to put it back and left the shop.
Police managed to trace Hill on November 9 and whilst being cautioned and charged by police, Hill responded: “It was only a f****** sandwich”.
Hill appeared from custody at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week and pled guilty.
His lawyer, Alex Muir, told the court how Hill had previously been sentenced to six months in prison for theft.
Presiding Sheriff Shirley Foran sentenced Hill to four months in prison to run consecutive with his current sentence.
