A MAN who admitted driving over 100mph in a 70mph speed limit in Irvine has been fined.

Jonathon Miller, 21, admitted speeding on the A78 near the Eglinton Interchange on October 22 last year.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard how the incident occurred at around 12.30pm on the southbound carriage and the weather conditions on the day were poor due to heavy rain.

Police travelling on the carriageway in an unmarked BMW observed Miller approaching behind them at speed.

After overtaking them, the officers immediately activated the speed detector within the car.

Despite surface water and poor visibility, police followed Miller for 0.3 of a mile and noted that he was driving at an average speed of 107mph.

The officers activated their siren and Miller pulled into a nearby lay-by. He was cautioned and charged and made no reply.

Miller, of Churchill Road, Kilmacolm, appeared at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week and pled guilty.

His solicitor, Douglas Wright, told the court how Miller is employed as a sales manager at Stellar in Irvine.

He revealed how Miller has been driving for three-and-a-half years and has “taken the matter to heart” by installing a speed meter in his car. Mr Wright added how Miller was late for work at the time of the offence but now realises his foolishness.

He insisted that Miller’s employment is in “jeopardy” because of the incident.

He said: “He works regular hours but is sometimes expected to work late.

“How he’s going to manage travelling from Kilmacolm is anyone’s guess, his employment is in some jeopardy.” But presiding Sheriff Brian Murphy had no sympathy for Miller and fined him £330 along with disqualifying him from driving for four months.
