COUNCIL bosses have come under fire over the state of Kilwinning Cemetery.

COUNCIL bosses have come under fire over the state of Kilwinning Cemetery.

Fed-up with strewn rubbish and unsightly molehills, one Kilwinning resident is demanding North Ayrshire Council to clean-up the cemetery.

The Times was provided with pictures by the resident showing the cemetery looking far from pleasant.

The main grass appears to be ridden with molehills and unturfed ground while shoring boards, stones and rubbish from previous building work is still lying within the grounds.

Speaking to the Times this week, the resident, who requested they remain anonymous, has called on NAC to take action.

They said: “I really wish the council would do something about the Kilwinning Cemetery.

“It used to win awards for how well kept it was but now it really is a mess.

“There’s molehills and rubbish all over the place so I’m hoping they will do something about it pretty soon because it’s been in a state for far too long.” This isn’t the first time that concerns have been raised about the cemetery.

Fellow Kilwinning resident John Harrison has campaigned tirelessly to clean-up the cemetery.

In 2008, he branded the area a “disgrace” due to the amount of rubbish lying around the cemetery.

However, the council are aware of the problems at the cemetery and insist the area will be tidied up.

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “We are aware of the molehill problem at Kilwinning Cemetery and have been working hard to resolve it for several weeks.

“No rubbish was found during our inspection. The shoring boards and recently excavated stones present will be removed as soon as possible.”
