A SIX car pile-up in Irvine brought chaos to the roads on Tuesday morning with four people being injured and one of them having to be airlifted to hospital.
The incident happened at around 8.35am on the A78 and led to the road between the Warrix Interchange and Eglinton Interchange being closed for over three hours causing major disruption to rush-hour traffic with hundreds of people affected.
There was a major response from the emergency services with several police and ambulance crews called along with an air ambulance that landed on the road to provide support to the people who had been involved in the crash.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed that four people were injured in the collision with one female being airlifted to Southern General Hospital in Glasgow and the other three being taken to Crosshouse Hospital.
At the time of the latest update when the Irvine Times went to press, the emergency services said there was no confirmation of how severe the injuries were to the individuals.
The flow of traffic on the A78 was able to get back to normal at around 11.50am when the emergency services re-opened the road after all safety checks were made.
North Ayrshire Police sent out a message on their social media page for all drivers in the area to “please take care on the roads today” due to the adverse weather conditions and thanked all of the drivers who were stuck on the A78 for their patience.
