AN experienced cyclist has died following a horrorcollision with a van on the A78 in Irvine.

George O’Hara suffered serious head injuries during the smash last Thursday morning.

Police have now appealed for witnesses and an investigation is ongoing.

This week, his family paid a moving tribute to the author and keen cyclist, who held national records in his earlier years.

After being treated at the scene, the 68-year-old was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow. He died from his injuries the following day.

The other vehicle involved in the collision was a silver Vauxhall Movano van. The two occupants were not injured.

The accident took place between the Warrix and Eglinton Interchanges around 9.40am.

Mr O’Hara’s family were said they were deeply saddened and shocked by the news.

In a statement, they said: “George, a much loved husband, dad and granddad, will be sorely missed by his devastated family.

“George was a recognised published author and an accomplished cyclist.

“He enjoyed racing and riding his bike for over 50 years and achieved many race victories, some at national level.

“He is admired in the cycling community for holding the record for cycling from Glasgow to Oban and back in under nine hours which stood for 18 years.” Sergeant Andy Johnston, Divisional Road Policing Unit in Irvine, asked anyone who witnessed the crash to contact officers via the 101 number.
