A BABY battling a mystery condition has celebrated her first birthday - a day her parents were told she might never see.

Brave Meadow Pipe turned one last week a year after being born with a disorder so rare it has left doctors baffled.

The plucky Irvine tot has been hooked up to oxygen and feeding tubes since they day she was born but just last month was able to take her first breaths on her own.

Her unknown condition means Meadow’s skull, throat and neck are smaller than they should be and won’t grow at the same rate as the rest of her body.

When she was born in August last year, three-and-a-half weeks early weighing just 5lbs 11.5oz, Meadow has had two tubes permanently tube attached to assist her breathing and has been fed fluids through a tube.

But today, Meadow’s mum, Laura Muir, says the one-year-old is thriving and is now breathing for herself, eating solid food and sitting up unaided.

To celebrate her birthday milestone Laura and Meadow’s dad Graham, 34, joined other family members, including big brothers Carson, four, Logan, 13, and Taylor, 17, for a special party fit for a princess at The Gailes.

Laura said: “We had an amazing day. She loved it. We had Mickey and Minnie Mouse there, a bouncy castle and face painting. We just wanted to make a fuss and make it a special day for her after everything she’s been through. There was a time we couldn’t even think as far ahead as her first birthday, but now she is doing so well. She is off her oxygen completely and eating solid food for herself rather than using the feeding tube. It’s amazing. People might not think that’s a big deal but to have your baby constantly hooked up to wires and machines is a horrible.

“And she had the wires taped to her face all the time which made her face constantly sore. She was a wee soul but she has really turned a corner. She’s doing amazingly well.” Following on from her own birthday milestone this week Meadow joined her family at the school gates to wish big brother Carson good luck as he started Primary One.
