A NATIONAL competition that remembers the First World War has been launched this week.

The event, which is run by the Royal British Legion Scotland, saw Annick Primary School come out victorious last year after uncovering incredible stories of World War One throughout the area and won a VIP experience at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

This year’s campaign is named, ‘Stories of the Sea - Hold The Front Page!’ and is the third annual competition held Legion Scotland, which is the largest ex-service membership charity in Scotland.

The challenge this year is asking Primary 5-7 pupils to travel back in time and imagine what life was like on board a battleship during the war and produce a newspaper article based on life on the high seas. The winner’s of this years competition will see them go on a three day trip to Orkney in the commemoration of the Battle of Jutland.

Kevin Gray MM, chief executive officer of Legion Scotland, said: “By asking pupils to transport themselves back to a time when our Royal Navy was the most powerful in the world we hope to help them understand and appreciate how WWI affected those who served at sea; the impact of war on their families, and how the war shaped the towns, villages and cities in which we now live.” Registration for the competition closes on November 17 with entries then submitted on March 1, 2016.

Schools can register at www.legionscotland.org.uk/schools or via Legion Scotland’s Schools Competition leaflet which has been issued to every primary school.
