FRIENDS of a young Irvine man who is battling cancer have organised a fundraiser to help the hospital where he’s being treated.

Barry Sturgeon, 25, from Bourtreehill was diagnosed with testicular cancer just three weeks ago.

He is currently receiving chemotherapy at Glasgow’s Beatson Hospital, where his progress is improving.

Now his friends have decided to thank the hospital for their quick diagnosis of Barry. They are planning to hold a Hallowe’en fundraising night on October 31 at the Gables Restaurant in Irvine to raise money for the Beatson Cancer Charity.

One of Barry’s best friends, David Downie, is hoping that the night can raise a substantial sum for the Beatson.

He said: “We hope to raise as much money as possible with all of the proceeds going to the Beatson Cancer Charity and contribute to the amazing work they do for the people of Scotland.

“This event is a statement to Barry’s determination. His family and friends are coming together to raise as much money as possible for the Beatson Cancer Charity and the amazing work that they do.

“This is a direct reflection on Barry’s strength and community spirit coming together to give a little back.” Another two of Barry’s friends, Sarah Brown and Lisa Doherty, have contacted many businesses around the area and have already received many donations.

Sarah praised Barry’s attitude since being diagnosed with cancer.

She said: “The news came as a bit of a shock to us all. You would never imagine this would happen to a young, fit, healthy man.

“I’m so proud of Barry and how positive he has been and his attitude toward this horrible disease. He has dealt with this situation amazingly!

“He has received overwhelming support from friends, family and even strangers.” The owners of the Gables Restaurant have been kind enough to donate their facilities for the event.

The night will consists of live music from a DJ, a charity auction, psychic readings, fun halloween games, raffles and further fundraising efforts such as head shaving and leg waxing.

Tickets cost £10 and can be purchased from the Gables Restaurant on Irvine High Street.
