A CHARITABLE Kilwinning couple are proving they can go the distance - by doing their first ever marathon together!
Now the pair, who describe themselves as 'non-runners', are on their way to next year"s New York marathon to raise cash for kids" charity Children First.
But neither Steven MacEwan nor his partner Joanne Martin are experienced runners so they"re jogging their way through a gruelling 18-week training programme to get ready for the race.
Care practitioner Steven, 27, explained: 'We"re doing all the training together.
'Because I play some football I"m a bit more used to it but I"m just going at Joanne"s pace.
'But she"s taking to it like a duck to water.'
Initially Steven mentioned to girlfriend Joanne, 28, that he might do a marathon only to find her jumping at the chance to run as a duo.
He said: 'Doing a marathon was one of the goals I set myself to achieve before I turned 30.
'Then when I told Joanne she said "I"ll do it with you."
'Within three days it was all organised and the flights were booked. We decided to do the New York one - if you"re going to do a marathon you might as well do the best.'
Meanwhile, caterer Joanne"s sister encouraged the couple to run in aid of the welfare charity where she works, Children First.
The group is aimed at ensuring every child has a safe and secure childhood and Steven and Joanne hope to run them up a £5,000 contribution.
As well as the 26 mile run on Sunday November 4 this year, the couple are organising a charity race night at Irvine Sports Club on Saturday June 14.
