A COUNCILLOR fighting to improve Irvine"s 'laughing stock' Christmas lights has slammed the council because her voluntary group is forced to pay around £60 to have every single lamp post they use security checked.
And angry Conservative Pat McPhee has said she is outraged because the checks have to be carried out several times a year before occasions like Marymass or hanging up flower baskets.
She slammed the NAC, who charge the fee on behalf of Roch Services Ltd, and said they were crippling the newly-formed Irvine Christmas Lights Committee who were trying to make a difference to the town"s embarrassing seasonal illuminations.
She said: 'We"ve got raise money the hard way like other groups through cheese and wine evenings and coffee mornings and fund-rasing. But when it comes down to it people who donate money want to see new Christmas lights - but all the money has got to go back to the council.'
