Petition opposes plans to redevelop Irvine site

A REDBURN man has launched an on-line petition opposing plans for a multi-million pound development at Quarry Road playing fields.

George Barr fears the move to create a new home for Irvine Meadow Football Club along with a supermarket, houses and nursing home, will have a detrimental impact on the existing open space at the site.

In his petition Mr Barr, from Dickson Drive, has called on the Scottish Parliament to ensure North Ayrshire Council and other local authorities "rigorously" enforce existing planning policies when considering developments on land currently used as playing fields or open spaces.

His grievance focuses on the potential loss of playing space at the Irvine site and believes users of the land, including nearby Woodlands Primary School, will be left with a "raw deal".

He said: "I would encourage members of the public who are opposed to the proposed plans to go online and sign up to the petition. Those wishing to sign up can do so on line at http://epetitions.scottish.parliament.uk/view_signatures.asp?PetitionID=352.";

Meadow General Secretary Iain McQueen has previously admitted a lot of work has still to be done behind the scenes to make the plans acceptable to club supporters and said the idea of a new stadium will be examined over the next two or three years.
