Bourtreehill residents hit out at Co-op closure
FURIOUS residents in Bourtreehill have launched a stinging attack on the decision to close the Co-operative store in Lower Vennel.
The Co-op have announced they will close the shop later this month resulting in the loss of 16 jobs.
Financial constraints are being blamed for the decision but regular users of the shop say it provides a "lifeline" for many locals and have launched a petition calling for it to stay.
This week Betty Weir, who helps run the nearby Broomlands and Bourtreehill Age Concern, said: "We launched the petition because a lot of people, many of whom are elderly, rely on the shop.
"The fact the workers have only been given a few weeks notice, in the build up to Christmas, is wrong."
