BEHIND BARS FOR PRIMARK FRAUD
A WOMAN has been jailed for trying to fraudulently obtain goods from an Irvine clothing shop.
Katrina Mullen was sentenced to three months in prison after admitting to swapping the price tag on goods she wished to purchase from Primark in Rivergate.
The 25-year-old tried to save herself £7.50 by exchanging the £11 price tag on the item she wanted to buy, for another at the cheaper price of £3.50 on 16 December last year.
Mullen, formerly of Irvine but now of Latherton Drive, Maryhill, Glasgow, also admitted to stealing a box of lipgloss and three charms from the store on the same day.
Defending Mr Kilkeown pleaded with the court to spare his client a jail sentence and instead issue her with a Community Payback Order.
He said: "She has addiction issues. She moved to Glasgow in 2010 and has had difficulties with alcohol and trouble with abusive partners, but she has the support of her mother in Irvine who has said she wants to take her in and support her.
"If she is given a custodial sentence she will only be released again and get into more difficulties because she will have no support in the community. It has only been in the last couple of years that she has been getting into these difficulties, since she moved to Glasgow."
But Sheriff Elizabeth McFarlane said because the offences had been committed while Mullen was on bail, she had no option but to jail her.
She received three months for the fraud and theft to run concurrently with a five month sentence for previous offences.
