EVICTIONS IN NORTH AYRSHIRE DOWN 32 PERCENT IN FOUR YEARS
SHELTER Scotland have praised North Ayrshire Council after it achieved a 32% reduction in evictions over the last four years - compared to the national average of a 46% reduction.
Shelter Scotland, which began its annual analysis of evictions figures in 2007/08, says there were 47 evictions in North Ayrshire last year - up seven percent from the previous year.
Launching its fourth annual report on evictions, the housing and homelessness charity says the figures are highly encouraging, with 20 out of Scotland's 26 local authority landlords showing significant reductions over the last four years.
Graeme Brown, Director of Shelter Scotland, says: "It's great news that evictions in North Ayrshire are down by 32 percent over the last four years.
"We have been campaigning to make eviction the last resort for social landlords and these figures show the council is responding to our concerns.
"We congratulate North Ayrshire Council for the progress it has made, but in light of a 7 percent increase last year we urge it to do as much as it can to reduce evictions further."
Commenting on the national picture on evictions and arrears, Mr Brown added: "At a time when cuts are hitting home and more people are struggling with household budgets, our analysis of the last four years shows that evictions have nearly halved across Scotland.
"This shows that by working closely with tenants to find a solution, social landlords can reduce arrears and ensure eviction truly is a last resort."
