PLANS to revitalise the Bridgegate area of Irvine have been slammed by the chair of the local community council as "Heaven for junkies".

Chairperson June Niven made the comments following discussion on the repositioning of Irvine's war memorial to make room for the new leisure centre.

At the last meeting of the Community Council, Provost Pat McPhee invited committee members for their opinions, with the majority agreeing the memorial and plaques should be integrated into the Bridgegate regeneration scheme.
