NORTH Ayrshire Council have been accused of allocating almost £1m cash meant for local schools to Irvine's new leisure centre.

Irvine West councillor Mattew Brown (SNP) said the Scottish Government gave the council £906,000 for teachers but it is to be used to buy land and consulting services for the planned leisure centre next to the Townhouse instead. The funding was also earmarked for a new slipway in Largs and repairs to Saltcoats town hall in the budget announced last Wednesday.

Councillor Brown said: "We have questioned the decision to spend the £900,000, which was meant for teachers. They want the money to be used for land acquisition and consultation for the new leisure centre and to repair a town hall roof in Saltcoats."
