AN IRVINE councillor hopes to have animal circuses banned from North Ayrshire, following a visit by the controversial Bobby Roberts Super Circus to the area.

Bobby and Moira Roberts, the circus owners, are scheduled to appear in court later this year accused of causing unnecessary suffering to an elderly elephant named Anne.

Their company hit the headlines last year when video footage of Anne being kicked and beaten was distributed to the press.

Despite the controversy, North Ayrshire Council has allowed the circus to return fo performances in this region, starting with a week-long run at Irvine Beach Park, which ended on Tuesday.
