The Queen’s Baton Relay is on its way!

The relay will visit ten locations in North Ayrshire today, including Irvine and Kilwinning.

The baton will be paraded on a one-day tour which takes in Skelmorlie, Largs, Millport, Kilbirnie, Dalry, Kilwinning, Irvine, Stevenston, Saltcoats and Ardrossan.

North Ayrshire’s day of celebration is already underway and will be arriving first in Kilwinning before moving onto Irvine.

In Kilwinning, McGavin Park and Kilwinning Sports Club will both play host to community fun days as too will Irvine’s Vineburgh Community Centre and Irvine Sports Club along with a big event at the Bridgegate for an afternoon of family fun.

Carrying the baton in Kilwinning are Colin Kirkwood, who raised thousands for charity in memory of his son Craig, along with Kilwinning Sports Club chiefs Colin Hunter and Jim McCubbin.

Joining them are Ross Pilling, Nairn McDonald, Michaela Hoy, John Allison and Michelle Cooper.

In Irvine, amongst those carrying the baton will be Thistle Help founder George Ruddick, Jim Heaney of Irvine Takeda Karate Club and Ron Cheyne of Ron’s Runners.

They will be joined by Caitlin Gibb, Caitlin McGarry, Eileen Morgan, Carly Wilson, Jean Scott Brennan, Andy Rennie, John McGarry, Leia Swan, David Weir, Martyn Clark, Danielle Torrance, Emma Stevely, Brogan Gibson, Ewan Alexander, Amanda Boucher, Georgia Henry, Lewis Henry, Jackie Kerr, Sian Hughes, Ross Carswell, Christina Larsen and Ross Gibson.

The nationwide relay will call at more than 400 communities the length and breadth of the country, setting off from Edinburgh and following a circuitous route to the Games venue in Glasgow.

The 40-day journey will cover 8,000 kilometres and has involved all Scotland’s 32 local authorities in showcasing the nation’s most-iconic landmarks and culture.

The baton has already been on an epic journey through all the other 69 nations and territories of the Commonwealth.

It has been on the road for 248 days since leaving Buckingham Palace on October 9 last year.
