AN IRVINE baby born with a mystery condition which left her breathing through a tube has taken her first breaths on her own.

Meadow Pipe was born in August last year with a disorder so rare it has left doctors baffled and has been hooked up to oxygen since they day she was born.

Her unknown condition means Meadow’s skull, throat and neck are smaller than they should be and won’t grow at the same rate as the rest of her body.

When she was born in August last year, three-and-ahalf weeks early weighing just 5lbs 11.5oz, Meadow has had two tubes permanently tube attached to assist her breathing and has been fed fluids through a tube.

But today, Meadow’s mum, Laura Muir, says the 11-month-old is thriving and is now breathing for herself, eating solid food and sitting up unaided.

Laura, 34, said: “We can’t actually believe it. She has made amazing progress. We didn’t know if she would ever be able to do any of these things and now she’s eating food, and she has been taking off her oxygen completely, expect for a couple of hours at night.

“It’s so nice to see her wee face without those tubes stuck on to it. She loves having them off.” Shortly after her birth parents Laura and Graham were told to prepare themselves for the worst.

But almost a year on little Meadow is defying the odds and her progress couldn’t have come at a better time for Laura, dad Graham, 34, and brothers Carson, four, Logan, 13, and Taylor, 17, who are now preparing for another milestone – the tot’s first birthday party next month .

Laura said: “We are having a big party for her with Mickey and Minnie and princess carriage balloons. I can’t wait. She amazes us every day, she is such a little fighter and we are so proud of her."
