A SOLDIER who tried to stop a yob vandalising a pub had his neck slashed in a revenge attack - threatening his army career.

Colin Paterson almost bled to death from a severed jugular vein - an injury which had prevented him going to Afghanistan with his unit, a court heard.

And last week knife-wielding Andrew Hamilton, 19, was locked up for nine years by a judge who told him he was lucky not to be facing a murder charge.

An earlier trial heard how trouble erupted in the Stewarton Arms pub in Avenue Square, Stewarton on Boxing Day last year.

Labourer Hamilton, of Rigghead, Stewarton, confronted Mr Paterson in Lainshaw Street later that night using a knife.

He had denied the attack, but a jury found him guilty of attempted murder.
