ELEVEN swans returned to Irvine Harbour last week following a clean up at an SSPCA rescue centre in Fife.

They were among 43 swans rescued from the Harbour after diesel and heating oil from a derailed train at Stewarton leaked into water supplies in January.

The Scottish SPCA have confirmed oil damaged the birds" feathers and burned parts of their skin. 22 of the rescued swans have since died, having ingested oil which caused internal damage and led to kidney failure.

The final 10 surviving birds have been transported to Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Unit in Beith and are expected to return to Irvine water this week.
